Strength Training
My name is Jenna Hosking. I am a Sport Scientist and Strength and Conditioning coach. In 2021 I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Anatomy & Physiology and Genetics at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. In 2022, I furthered my education and completed a Bachelor of Science (Medical) Honours in Exercise Science degree. My passion lies in high performance contact and combat sports, specifically rugby and mixed martial arts.
In 2023 I worked as a researcher, data collector, analyst and sport scientist for World Rugby and SA Rugby, working on various projects specifically looking at tackling technique and injury/concussion risk. I also worked with the USA Women's Rugby Union team and French Women's Rugby Sevens team.
My research is focused on tackle technique in rugby union, tackle height, injury prevention, concussion, nutrition for athletes, and the female athlete and the different biomechanics and physiology of the female and how this affects their training and performance in sport.
In 2024 I started a Strength and Conditioning and Rehab Coach internship with the Stormers Rugby Union team and Western Province, where I still currently work at alongside Next Level Fighting and Fitness.
I have always loved sports and being active from a young age. Throughout my youth I did ballet, modern dancing, horse riding, netball, hockey, tennis and synchronized swimming. In my later teenage years and early 20’s my main sport was dancing and running. I participated in a number of performances and productions, competitions and races. However, I always felt there was an extra element of my training that I wasn’t doing that could make me a better athlete. I then fell in love with strength and conditioning and benefits that this kind of training can do for athletes, as well as the general population. Once I had found strength and conditioning I almost immediately saw results. I started getting PBs in races, getting gold medals and feeling fitter and healthier overall.
Strength and conditioning is vital for any individual. Having muscular strength improves the synchronization between muscle groups, which enhances movement efficiency. Strength training improves balance and stability, which can reduce the risk of falls and injuries. It also helps to flexibility and mobility. Strength training improves nerve-muscle control and increases the stability of functioning joints. It also improves the power of athletes by targeting motor units. Secondary benefits of strength training is prevention of chronic diseases such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, arthritis, back pain, depression, and obesity. Strength training can also help improve posture, increase bone density, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. It also has been shown to improve mood, self-esteem, self-efficacy and can protect one against age-related cognitive decline.
