Brandon Hoffman Aka - Prof. Hoff
Jiu-Jitsu
I was originally born in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on the 30 April 1979. As a young kid I trained and competed in Karate for many years. This developed early on a passion for Martial Arts and its benefits of developing self-confidence, compassion and humility moved to Cape Town, Western Cape when I was ten years old and matriculated from high school at Rondebosch Boys' High school in 1996.
In March 1999 I moved to London, England where I lived and worked for six years and trained extensively in Muay Thai, the national Martial Art that originated in Thailand. In this time, I travelled around parts of England, Scotland and Europe. I then backpacked solo all over Southeast Asia, India and Nepal before heading over to Egypt. For a couple years I also lived and worked in Auckland, New Zealand. During my stay in London, I met and fell in love with a Brazilian girl which led me to Brazil.
In Brazil I worked as an English language teacher and studied Brazilian Portuguese at University. As soon as I arrived in Brazil, I searched for a Muay Thai academy to resume my training and instead stumbled upon a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu academy. I immediately fell in love with the 'Gentle Art' of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I loved the style and its effectiveness together with that sense of community that brings people together regardless of your professional or religious background or where you come from, etc.
I began my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu journey in Brazil starting as a first-day White Belt, not knowing how to tie a belt, through to Black Belt. I am the only South African to have started Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in Brazil and to have gone from White Belt to Black Belt only in Brazil.
I fell in love with the art and this indeed became a great passion of mine. I trained twice per day, six days per week and then competed every weekend on Sundays. I registered with three different federations to compete in more Jiu-jitsu Championships. There were many weekends where I competed in one tournament at one location on a Saturday and in another championship at a different location on a Sunday.
With this discipline, consistency and dedication it took me over ten long years to eventually be promoted to the prestigious rank of Black Belt in November 2013.
My Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition achievements include:
3 x State Champion - Gold medalist.
4 x State Champion - Silver medalist.
7 x State Champion - Bronze medalist.
Samurai Jiu-jitsu Championship - Gold medalist
Copa de Jiu-jitsu - Gold medalist.
After nearly two decades of living and working abroad in several countries on different continents I decided to return to my beautiful home of South Africa. I had now discovered my passion and purpose in life. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu has absolutely changed my life for the better. It has filled my life with purpose, peace and joy. I feel I have received a gift, and it is my responsibility and duty to share this gift with as many people as possible. I want to give back to my community and society what Brazilian Jiu-jitsu has given me. Since returning to South Africa nearly ten years ago I have been teaching Brazilian Jiu-jitsu full time. This year November will complete ten years as a Black Belt.
